As many of you know, March BreACK! is a really big deal around here. With the exception of our Family Advent Calendar, it’s our busiest time of year. March Break, for us, usually consists of a stay-cation in which we bake, build, draw, read, solve, experiment, and write like nobody’s business. You can check out our Archives from previous years here.
For 2015, our March BreACK! theme is going to be “Imagined Galaxies.”
As usual, I’ve written a story for the kids to read and illustrate over the course of the week. What? You don’t have your own original manuscript lying around for your kids to read and illustrate? No problem! Find a story or chapter book that you can read together as a family, and divide it into 4 or 5 manageable sections. Tackle one section every day and use your go-to art supplies to illustrate or re-illustrate, as the case may be. Go wild! Try a different art technique each day!
This year’s story is called “The Earl of Tellurine.” It’s a future-space swashbuckler, loosely based on a couple of different Dumas epics and set in an imagined cosmos known as the Beeshus System. At its heart, it’s a revenge plot: A young pilot named Anson Riverest from the planet Mysinae loses his job, his girlfriend, and “the best years of his life,” at the hands of a couple of jealous ne’er-do-wells named Frank Optimacy and Rand Slang. These two get away with all kinds of mischief because the Beeshus System is the midst of political turmoil. [Aided by the State Concessor, Felice Arrowhart, the reigning tyrant, Raja Eustasis Telesphore 18 keeps trying to silence the upstart “Darling” of the independence movement, Lira N’voy Route.] With the help of his mentor, Eria Fabré from Chalet Ferrious, and the band of Pirateers on the U. F. O. Wanre Nicht, Anson reinvents himself as the Earl of Tellurine. Brandishing his Argentilian Scythe, he returns to the capital planet of Capris to revenge himself upon his enemies. But will he be satisfied with the results?
To go along with our story, naturally, we’ve got all sorts of recipes and art projects lined up: Galactic Mint Brownies, anyone? Space Helmet Self-Portraits? Invented Constellations?
Stay tuned. It’s going to be a wild COSMIC ride. Our Tentative Schedule is below…
